We are incredibly fortunate nowadays that we can get a lot of great quality dresses for much less than that, of course. Most of the dresses I own are budget versions, especially the ones I wear more often. But I always feel it’s nice to have a few special pieces in my wardrobe! Sometimes the quality of the fabric or the manufacturing are superior and such a piece will last for decades. I have several silk dresses by Alberta Ferretti, Diane von Furstenberg, Hugo or Paul & Joe for instance which I choose from when a special occasion is in order.
Mind you, I have tried on designer gowns on the other hand that did not live up to their high price at all! They were shapeless and not well made. In those cases a budget version would have been the far better option. One just has to keep one’s eyes open for special finds. The Karl Lagerfeld dress below for instance could be a timeless piece that can be accessorized nicely and worn to many different semi-formal occasions. If it’s well done it’s worth getting the silk version. If not, then something like the Dalmatian print dress I had on the blog a while ago might be a far better option. It is a similar style but for much less the price.
Do you sometimes invest in a designer dress for a special occasion? Or do you prefer the budget version?
