Colonial Zen Interior

Living in a city apartment I find it important to have a place of peace to come home to. With winter approaching the need for having a cozy home becomes even stronger. There are a few things I have on my interior wishlist that are not seasonal at all though.

I’m currently in the middle of trying to reorganize my wardrobe and have gotten a new chest of drawers and a few shelves from IKEA. While I was there I fell for a rather colourful low pile rug. Although I am a sucker for fun colour combinations when dressing I usually prefer a certain simplicity when it comes to interior decoration. White and black being the main colours but I rather like using individual colourful pieces as a focal point. As I have been particularly fond of combining electric blue with light pink lately the colour combination of this Doftranka rug immediately appealed to me and so it came home with me.

This is a little selection of recent interior finds that fit in with the bright blue and black theme – I would call this style a kind of colonial zen as it features exotic details like this adorable rhino side table in an otherwise simplistic environment. I admit some of these pieces are rather extravagant but I really like the idea of combining classic items with modern design and sustainable materials.

As you can see I have a real fondness for Chesterfield chairs – although classic ones in muted colours like this one here are rather timeless I would also love having a club chair in a more unusual shade like this one in pastel blue.
How cute are these felted pillows that look like giant pebbles? They are made from merino wool by a small group of Polish designers at fivetimesone with a focus on sustainable design. Check out their homepage – they come in really fun colours too. Some other items I have been coveting are the screen-printed home textiles by Frohstoff and handmade candles by Isle of Wolf. Frohstoff uses local and natural materials for their products and Isle of Wolf candles are made from pure plant wax with natural essential oils. Jonathan Adler makes these whimsical little zebra dishes made of high-fired porcelain. The great thing is that they also come in several different colours.
zen
I have spent countless weekends being annoyed at the afternoon sun in summer while trying to watch a movie. So window blinds are firmly on my wishlist for the living-room. These roll-down curtains by Velux are a great choice if you want the option of having a completely dark living- or bedroom. They are available in a great range of colours and you can choose the one that best fits the colour scheme of your room. I also like that the fabric used is certified under the textile standard.*

Last but not least, I keep falling in love with pretty tea-related items. Being a huge green tea drinker I am quite in love with the elegant simplicity of the traditional Japanese kyusu teapots. The blue cast iron one is an entirely different style but would look great as a table centerpiece.

Wow that rhino table is utterly bizarre and yet it really works. I can imagine it beside a roaring fire, sitting in that chair… The colours here are wonderful. All of them together would just look so great, with big massive bay windows… Oh yes. I have a chair like that on my wishlist, too, only I think I’d want it in a nice dark green or red.
