Shark week is a an annual, week-long programming block on Discovery Channel which features shark-based content. It was originally devoted to conservation efforts and correcting misconceptions about sharks and premiered in 1988.
Controversy
Unfortunately, many of the featured shows have become purely entertainment-oriented and focus on drama and action (with titles like ‘World’s Deadliest Shark’) instead of shark conservation and propagating knowledge. For that it has earned some criticism from the science community and rightly so.
Nevertheless, I feel that shark week is an opportunity to give these majestic animals some coverage which – ideally – results in more understanding, fascination and a desire to protect the shark species left on our planet. So here’s my little wishlist of shark themed accessories which I’ve come across recently and am totally in love with.
Shark Love
I’m a big fan of sharks and hope to see them in our oceans for many more years to come. Population numbers are plummeting though and for some species it’s not at all sure whether they will be with us much longer. And even if you don’t like sharks – many people love the sea and love to go scuba-diving or swimming surrounded by swarms of colourful fishes. That might not be the typical picture we’ll see in a few decades though…The existence of predators like sharks is essential for healthy ocean ecosystems. Same as their counterparts on land, these hunters have been hunted to near extinction for no fault of their own. So go hug a shark this week!

Loving your post as I am a huge fan of sharks since I was like 12. those beast are magnificent . I agree with you ‘Shark Week’ are often documentaries that are just there to make audience with stupid watch bait titles. But many other TV channels do better (more scientific) documentary like BBC or else.
